Appeals Process

Submit the intent to appeal form and the appropriate appeal service fee within 30 calendar days of the American Board decision to:

Payments may be made by personal or cashier’s check, or money order to The American Board, Inc. Submit a typed statement documenting your request for an appeal. Your statement should inform the committee of the discrepancy experienced that qualifies your request for reconsideration. The statement should include your signature.

Appeal Procedure Overview

Accommodations

The American Board will:

  • Verify receipt of the candidate’s request for accommodation(s).
  • Confirm that all required documentation has been received from the candidate for consideration.
  • Review and collect all candidate correspondence related to the accommodations request.
  • Submit these documents along with the candidate submissions to the Appeal Committee for review.
  • Schedule a date and time for the Appeal Committee’s review, notify and receive confirmation from the committee members.
  • Host the Appeal Committee meeting where committee members meet, review, and make a final decision.
  • Notify the candidate in writing of the committee’s decision within 60 days.
  • In the case of an appeal of merit, return the appeal fee to the candidate.

This service will only be performed once per year per candidate.

Background Check

The American Board will:

  • Verify receipt of the candidate’s background check.
  • Review the results of the candidate’s criminal record as provided by the FBI and other sources.
  • Review and collect all candidate correspondence related to the background check.
  • Submit these documents along with the candidate submissions to the Appeal Committee for review.
  • Arrange a date and time for the Appeal Committee’s review, notify and receive confirmation from the committee members.
  • Host the Appeal Committee meeting where committee members meet, review, and make a final decision.
  • Notify the candidate in writing of the committee’s decision within 60 days.
  • In the case of an appeal of merit, return the appeal fee to the candidate.

This service will only be performed once per customer.

Misconduct in connection with an examination or testing irregularities

The American Board will:

  • Confirm the receipt of the signed misconduct incident report from the test center proctor.
  • Notify the candidate that a test center incident report has been received and request a response within 14 calendar days.
  • Verify and confirm the receipt of the candidate’s report of the incident. The candidate’s statement must be signed with an original signature.
  • Arrange a date and time for the Appeal Committee’s review, notify and receive confirmation from the committee members.
  • Allow the Appeal Committee to review all documents and notes submitted by the test center proctor and the customer, including the audio and video recordings from the test center location.
  • Notify the candidate in writing of the committee’s decision within 60 days.
  • In the case of an appeal of merit, return the appeal fee to the candidate.

This service will only be performed once per exam.

** Special Note Regarding Exam Appeals

No examination rescores will be conducted during the appeals process. Candidates may request a rescore through a different request and form.

Transcript

The American Board will:

  • Verify receipt of the candidate’s transcript.
  • Review the candidate’s transcript as provided.
  • Review and collect all candidate correspondence related to transcripts.
  • Arrange a date and time for the appeal committee’s review, notify and receive confirmation from the committee members.
  • Submit these documents along with the candidate submissions to candidate services for review.
  • Notify the candidate in writing of the committee’s decision within 60 days.
  • In the case of an appeal of merit, return the appeal fee to the candidate.

This service will only be performed once per customer.

Revocations

The American Board reserves the right to revoke a teacher’s certificate if the individual is charged with any offense, misconduct, or if the candidate is charged with falsifying documents presented to the American Board for certification.

In the case of revocation, the American Board will notify the teacher in writing that his or her certificate has been revoked. The American Board will also report the teacher’s revocation to the appropriate state and national authorities.

The American Board will:

  • Verify that the candidate has been charged with a violation.
  • Notify customer that ABCTE has documented evidence of a criminal violation and request a response within 14 calendar days.
  • Arrange a date and time for the Appeal Committee’s review, notify and receive confirmation from the committee members.
  • Allow the Appeal Committee to review all documents and notes submitted by candidate services and the candidate.
  • Notify the candidate in writing of the committee’s decision within 60 days.
  • In the case of an appeal of merit, return the appeal fee to the candidate.

This service will only be performed once per candidate.
