Disability Accommodations

The American Board provides appropriate testing accommodations for individuals with documented disabilities. We use the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines to make disability determinations.

Reasonable accommodations that are appropriate to the disability will be granted to the extent that such accommodations do not lessen the examination’s ability to reflect the student’s aptitude or achievement level, fundamentally alter the examination, or result in undue burden.

If you will need a testing accommodation, you must make your request and have it approved BEFORE scheduling any exams.

To apply for a disability accommodation request form, email us at cs@americanboard.org.

Scheduling Your Exams

To schedule your exam(s) at the Pearson VUE testing center nearest you, you must do the following:

  1. Schedule your test session with Pearson VUE. You can register online anytime at peasonvue.com/abcte. You can also call Pearson VUE at 1-866-899-6189 Monday – Friday, 8am – 8pm EST.
  2. Be sure to have your American Board identification number available when you register. Your ID number can be found in your account (click here to access).
  3. You will be able to schedule your exam on whatever date is most convenient for you.
  4. Please note: We highly recommend that you take your PTK exam first, as it takes 4-6 weeks to receive the exam results. We also recommend you take your PTK exam and subject area exam on separate days to avoid fatigue.

*If you need to reschedule or cancel an exam appointment, you must do so AT LEAST 48 hours prior to the testing appointment. If you do not reschedule or cancel the exam more than 48 hours prior to the testing appointment, you will be subject to a late cancellation change of $195.00.

The Day of Your Exam

Both Pearson VUE and the American Board have guidelines for the day of your exam. Read the following rules and regulations below BEFORE you take your exam.

  1. You must arrive at the Pearson VUE testing center at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled examination start time. If you do not arrive by the scheduled starting time, the testing center staff may not admit you.

You will be responsible for a late cancellation fee of $195.00 for arriving late unless you are able to provide evidence that you were delayed by reasons beyond your control. Traffic and slow public transportation are not excuses for being late

  1. To be admitted into the exam, you must bring 2 forms of signature identification with you. You must bring at least one form of government issued photo ID. This could be a driver’s license, passport, or military identification card with signature. The second form of ID can be a credit or debit card.

Expired identification cards will not be accepted. If you fail to provide proper up-to-date identification, you will be denied admission to the test, marked as absent, and subject to a $195 late cancellation fee. Your exam will not be able to be rescheduled until you pay the fee.

  1. At the beginning of your testing session, you will be required to fill out a non-disclosure form. You will have 3 minutes to complete this form. If you do not fill out this form within 3 minutes, you will not be able to continue the test. You will then need to pay $195 for a future testing date.
  2. No food, drink, or weapons are permitted at the testing center. All personal possessions such as cell phones, purses, jackets, etc. must be left outside of the testing room.
  3. The only permitted reason for leaving the testing room is to use the restroom. Additional testing time will not be given for restroom breaks.
  4. No communication or assistance of any kind may be given or received during the exam.
  5. Exams must be completed during your testing session. No work can be completed before or after your testing session.
  6. Pearson VUE testing centers will provide writing instruments, headphones, calculators, and reference material if applicable for your exam.
  7. Disruptive behavior in the test center may result in your dismissal from the test session. See below for more details on misconduct.

American Board Candidate Misconduct & Cheating

Misconduct of any kind during your examinations is not permitted. Misconduct and cheating is classified as, but not limited to, the following:

  • Falsifying credentials
  • Unauthorized communication with another individual within the testing room, or with an individual outside of the classroom, during an examination
  • Using unauthorized materials or equipment during an examination
  • Removing examination materials of any kind from the testing room

Pearson VUE testing center staff members are trained to document the occurrence of any misconduct or unusual activity.

If it is determined that a customer is culpable of misconduct or cheating, the candidate will be subject to a variety of penalties including, but not limited to, invalidation of scores, disqualification from subsequent examinations, and termination of certification eligibility.

In cases where candidate misconduct or cheating is discovered after a candidate has obtained their American Board certification, the American Board may rescind the candidate’s certification.

Candidates accused of misconduct are eligible for an appeal.
