How to Become a Teacher in West Virginia
To become a teacher in West Virginia with American Board’s teacher certification program, candidates will need to complete the following steps:
- Hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. Candidates must hold a minimum 2.5 GPA or higher.
- Pass American Board’s required pedagogy exam and subject area exam.
- Submit your transcript(s) to American Board and pass a federal background check.
- Pass the state required subject matter test.*
- Apply for your Initial Professional Certificate with the West Virginia Department of Education.
- Begin teaching!
* If you wish to begin teaching on a First-Class permit before you complete American Board’s program, you must pass the state approved subject matter test before you are eligible to do so.
