How to Become a Science Teacher
In order to earn science teacher certification with American Board, you will need to meet the following requirements:
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher.
- Submit your official college or university transcripts to the American Board.
- Pass a standard background check.
- Pass the Professional Teaching Knowledge exam (PTK). This exam will be taken on a computer and must be completed at a Pearson VUE testing center. The exam will consist of 145 multiple choice questions and a writing component. We suggest you take this exam before your subject area exam.
- Pass the American Board General Science exam. This exam will be taken on a computer and must be completed at a Pearson VUE testing center. We suggest taking this exam after you complete your PTK exam.
Become a Science Teacher in Your State
American Board’s Science teacher certification is currently offered in the following states. Click a state below to learn of the specific requirements to become a teacher in that state:
*In Idaho, candidates who are seeking a Natural Science endorsement must choose biology, physics, or chemistry on their American Board application and pass that selected single subject science assessment in addition to American Board general science assessment and PTK assessment. Candidates are advised to take the American Board single-subject science exam and the PTK before taking the American Board general science assessment in order to obtain a natural science endorsement. Idaho candidates will not be able to teach on a natural science endorsement alone; the endorsement must be in addition to a single-subject science certificate. **To teach physics, you will be required to complete a separate certification program, also offered by the American Board. A physics certification is not required to teach any other sciences, meaning you can just take the physics certification without the general science certification if you would only like to teach physics. ***Candidates in Arizona and Ohio should check with the state department of education to learn what subjects are available to them through American Board’s program. Candidates in these states do not take American Board subject exams.
