Alaska Teacher Certification

The Green to Teach pathway is a state-approved, post-baccalaureate, alternative route to Alaska teacher certification. It is designed to support active-duty military members, veterans, and military spouses who hold a bachelor’s degree and are interested in becoming classroom teachers in Alaska public schools. Currently, Anchorage School District (ASD) is the only approved school district for the Green to Teach program.

During the Green to Teach pathway, candidates complete required coursework through American Board, participate in structured on-the-job learning within an approved Alaska public school district, and meet all State of Alaska requirements to be eligible for teacher certification.

Alaska Teacher Certification for Only $1,000

How to Become a Teacher in Alaska

Pre-Approval & Authorization

Get the “green light” from the Alaska DEED to start your journey.

  1. Submit to DEED: Send your Green to Teach pre-approval form, official transcripts, and passing Praxis Core scores.
  2. Apply for Authorization: Use the TeachAK portal to apply for your Student Teacher Authorization Certificate.
  3. Verification: Ensure you receive your certificate before starting your program or placement.

Placement & Onboarding

Secure your position within the Anchorage School District (ASD).

  1. Apply: Submit your application through DoD SkillBridge (if eligible) or directly to ASD for Green to Teach.
  2. Interview & Confirm: Complete district interviews and receive your official placement confirmation.
  3. Onboard: Finalize HR requirements and provide proof of your Authorization Certificate to your mentor before your start date.

American Board Training & Exams

Complete American Board’s PTK exam and Alaska’s subject area exam for your chosen content area.

  1. Enroll: Submit your pre-approval form to American Board to receive your discount code, then register online.
  2. PTK Exam: Study the coursework modules and pass the Professional Teaching Knowledge (PTK) exam.
  3. Subject Exam: Register for and pass the Alaska-required exam for your specific content area.
  4. Certification: Submit all scores to American Board to receive your Certificate of Completion.

Final State Certification

Officially become a licensed educator in Alaska.

  1. DEED Application: Complete the Alaska Initial Teacher Certification application.
  2. Final Submissions: Provide your American Board certificate, passing exam scores, and documentation of mandatory state trainings.
  3. Finish: Pay the required certification fees and receive your Initial Alaska Teacher Certificate.
