*Elementary Education is automatically included with all Special Education programs. Certification in both areas must be completed for an American Board Special Education Certificate to be issued.
How to Teach in Alabama
- Submit your transcript(s) to American Board and pass a federal background check.
- Pass American Board’s required pedagogy exam and subject area exam.
- Pass the state approved subject area assessment.
- Obtain a teaching position at a school and receive a recommendation for an alternative teaching certificate from your employing Alabama county/city superintendent.
- Apply for an alternative teaching certificate.
- Complete the Alabama Teacher Mentoring Program within three years of receiving your alternative certificate.
- Complete the state required pedagogy assessment.
- Upgrade your license to a Professional Educator Certificate.
