Teacher Certifications Offered in Alabama

*Elementary Education is automatically included with all Special Education programs. Certification in both areas must be completed for an American Board Special Education Certificate to be issued.

How to Teach in Alabama

  1. Enroll in American Board’s teacher certification program. You must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university to be eligible to enroll.
  2. Complete the following requirements to receive your first Statement of Eligibility from American Board:
    1. Submit proof of passing score(s) of the current Alabama approved Praxis Subject Assessment as outlined on the Approved American Board Teaching Fields & Testing Requirements chart. 
    2. Complete a criminal history background check by both the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation (ASBI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) through the ALSDE.
    3. Submit verification of United States citizenship or lawful presence in the United States.
  3. Obtain your Conditional Certificate in a Teaching Field (CCTF) by securing a teaching position and having your human resources administrator submit your CCTF application. This is a one-year teaching certificate that must be renewed each year. Up to three CCTFs may be held (if eligible) within four consecutive scholastic years.
  4. Begin teaching and prepare for and pass American Board’s required pedagogy and subject area exams before your program expiration date.
  5. Teach on your CCTF for at least 1 year and complete the Alabama Teacher Mentoring Program.
  6. Complete the state required pedagogy assessment.
    1. Individuals who complete LESS THAN three full years of teaching experience while holding the CCTF must pass the edTPA assessment. EdTPA must be completed while employed and while holding the
    2. Individuals who complete three full years of teaching experience while holding the CCTF may choose to pass the edTPAOR the Praxis PLT.
  7. Apply for your Professional Educator Certificate in conjunction with American Board.
