ABCTE Welcomes Five Renowned Education Leaders to Board of Directors

Washington, DC (December 1, 2005) — The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) has welcomed five new members to its board of directors, Board Chairman Tony Colón announced today.

The members are:

  • Shawn Arévalo McCollough, Superintendent of the Maricopa County Regional School District in Phoenix, Arizona
  • Dr. Ting L. Sun, Vice President of Leadership and Quality at the California State Charter Schools Association
  • Tommy Espinoza, President and CEO of the Raza Development Fund, Inc.
  • Dr. Matthew Ladner, Director of State Projects at the Alliance for School Choice
  • Julio A. Fuentes, President & CEO of the Florida State Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

American Board President Dr. Kathleen Madigan to Participate in NCSL Annual Conference

Dr. Madigan to Discuss Teacher Quality, Recruitment and Retention

San Francisco, CA (July 22, 2003) — Addressing the need to place highly qualified teachers in every classroom in order to achieve student academic success, the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence announced that organization president, Dr. Kathleen Madigan, will participate in a panel discussion at the National Conference of State Legislatures Annual Conference. Dr. Madigan will discuss the definition of a “highly qualified" teacher and how new innovations in teacher preparation help to recruit and retain qualified individuals into the teaching profession.

Idaho Announces New Pathway to Teacher Certification

WASHINGTON, DC (March 2, 2004)— Governor Kempthorne and Deputy U.S. Secretary of Education Hickok today praised the Idaho State Board of Education in announcing the launch of a new pathway to teacher certification for individuals with the passion and desire to teach. Offered through the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE), Passport to TeachingSM certification provides a time-efficient and cost-effective way for talented individuals with a bachelor’s degree or higher to enter the teaching field. This approach will help Idaho meet the requirements set forth by the federal No Child Left Behind Act to place a “highly qualified" teacher in every classroom by the 2005-06 school year.

Idaho Education Leader Dr. Randy Thompson Joins American Board

WASHINGTON, DC (May 28, 2004)— The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (American Board) today proudly announced that Dr. Randy Thompson, former Chief Academic Officer (CAO) for the Idaho State Board of Education, will serve as its vice president of Marketing and Business Development. Thompson will lead the American Board’s marketing efforts to state governments and agencies as the organization seeks to expand adoption of its alternative teaching pathway to more states.

American Board Teams with Franklin Pierce College to Provide Interactive Preparation for Teacher Certification Exam

WASHINGTON, DC (June 1, 2004)— The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (American Board) today announced its partnership with Franklin Pierce College to offer an online preparation tool for the Passport to TeachingSM certification examination. The four-module program focuses on developing and strengthening Professional Teaching Knowledge to better prepare candidates seeking American Board certification.
