Become a Teacher in Arkansas with American Board
To enroll with the American Board, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree and be able to pass a background check. Students hoping to certify in Arkansas will have up to 1 year to pass the Principals of Teaching Knowledge (PTK) examination and an exam in the subject area of their choice. After completing the appropriate application forms, students will then be able to apply for a teaching position with the Arkansas Department of Education.
Once they begin teaching, new teachers will participate in a two year mentorship program through the Arkansas Department of Education. Successful evaluations by supervisors and experienced peers will allow new teachers to upgrade their teacher’s license, leading to a permanent, renewable standard license.
Arkansas residents will be able to certify in the following subjects through the American Board:
Middle Grades (4-8). Pick 2 subjects.*
*To receive a license from the state of Arkansas to teach Middle Levels/Middle School, you must certify in two subject areas. The American Board program costs include one subject area. Adding an additional certification will cost $850.
