More than 8 million people move between states each year. While some people move for work, others move to be near family or a geography they prefer. For these people, it’s crucial that they find employment once relocated. American Board provides transferable teacher certification that moves with you.

Below we share the story of Theresa Ramirez, an educator who has used her American Board certification to teach in three different states.

Why I Pursued Teacher Certification

Theresa Ramirez didn’t pursue a teaching degree or career when she was in college. Instead, she explains, ” I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. Initially, I chose this degree to pursue a career in publishing, which I did for a few years. However, it became clear to me that I did not want to spend my life in front of a computer screen.”

Theresa continues, “when the idea of teaching was brought up to me, it was all too perfect. Teaching takes my initial love of books and my disdain for computer work, and merges them together.”

Transferable Teacher Certification

Theresa explains, “when I decided to become a teacher, I already had my degree. I didn’t want to spend a fortune going back to school to get a Master’s in education—what if I didn’t like it?”

She continues, detailing why she selected American Board for her transferable teacher certification. “American Board’s program was practical. It was reasonably priced, I could work on it around my schedule, and it offered me the ability to teach in multiple states. I was eager to complete the course and pass all of my tests. I did so in less than three months to start teaching for the new school year. Because of the program, I was able to work at my own pace, and I worked through the program all day, every day (except when eating, sleeping, and working a part-time job). I reached my goal and had no problem passing all of the tests. American Board was unique in that I could work as much as I wanted as quickly as I wanted.”

Making the Move

“I started my teaching career in Mississippi. After my first year, I moved to Florida and because I was certified from taking the American Board, this was not a problem. I taught in Florida in both public and charter schools. While in Florida, I earned my full teaching certification, which I used to transfer to Maryland when I moved there several years later. The information that I learned was valuable at all locations in all different types of schools. I’ve taught at public, charter, and private schools. American Board gave me the confidence that I had the skills needed to become a highly effective teacher.”

It’s easy for Theresa to explain why she’s made a career out of teaching. She says, “teaching has its own magic. You share your passion with your students, but they share theirs with you as well. You see a difference that you make in the world, and you see it everyday.”
