Strong leadership is essential in every classroom. When teachers lead with clarity and purpose, they influence not only academic outcomes but the confidence, curiosity, and character students carry forward.

Across the country, schools continue to need educators who are willing to step into leadership roles, whether that means mentoring students, coaching, collaborating with new colleagues, or helping shape school culture. The impact of teacher leadership is immediate and lasting, making it one of the most meaningful ways to serve a community.

National Leadership Day, observed each year on February 20, offers a timely reminder of the role educators play as everyday leaders, shaping futures one classroom at a time.

Educational Leaders

Leadership at school starts with great teachers. Teachers tend to be natural leaders. They shape young minds, build confidence, and guide students toward future success. In fact, studies find that “teachers matter more to student achievement than any other aspect of schooling.”

Research shows that schools where teachers take on leadership roles—such as mentoring peers, contributing to instructional decisions, and collaborating on curriculum—demonstrate stronger instructional practice and improved student learning environments. For these reasons, we celebrate teachers, their leadership abilities, and their commitment to students.

Beyond the classroom, school administrators create learning environments that foster growth. Principals must recognize great teachers and work to create an environment where they can thrive. Research shows that effective school leadership significantly impacts student achievement. One study found that principals account for 25% of a school’s impact on student learning.

Furthermore, policymakers must advocate for change that strengthens education nationwide. Strong leadership at every level ensures student success.

At American Board, we know educational leadership begins in the classroom. A great teacher does more than instruct—they motivate, mentor, and guide. We also know that it is crucial to keep great teachers in the classroom. This is often difficult as many great teachers are tempted to move to administrative positions, or leave the field entirely. ASCD is one organization that provides resources to help teachers remain in schools in leadership positions, without leaving the classroom.

If you’re not teaching yet but you’ve long felt the calling, we encourage you to pursue your certification. The next generation of leaders is waiting for your guidance. You can certify online, quickly and affordably, by visiting www.americanboard.org.
