ABCTE Thanks the 2,000 Individuals Pursuing Their Teaching Dreams during National Teacher Appreciation Week

WASHINGTON, DC (April 28, 2006)—The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) thanks the 2,000 candidates pursuing the Passport to Teaching certification program, and alumni who are currently teaching, for making the commitment to education and their students.

With teacher shortages affecting nearly every school district in the country and a need for 200,000 teachers nationwide each year, ABCTE is poised to continue recruiting and certifying talented teachers.  During national Teacher Appreciation Week, ABCTE is honoring both current and prospective teachers for their commitment and desire to impact student learning.

ABCTE’s Passport to Teaching certification is a respected, cost-effective and time-efficient process. Candidates for Passport to Teaching certification must demonstrate mastery on examinations of subject area and professional teaching knowledge. Individuals can prepare for certification on their own time and at their own pace, using preparation materials available from a variety of sources. No additional college courses are required unless the certification candidate chooses to participate in them for preparation purposes.

Currently, Passport to Teaching certification is available in the areas of elementary education, English, mathematics, general science, biology, special education, chemistry and physics.  ABCTE also offers a reading endorsement for elementary teachers.  Availability of certification areas and requirements vary by state.

Passport to Teaching is recognized as a route to state certification in Florida, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Idaho and Utah. Many charter and private schools nationwide also recognize the certification, which is offered in a variety of subject areas.  Each state has its own requirements for certification.
